The Nativity is presented in a very simple way, often with only the Holy Family figures, focusing on the gift of the Child Jesus. Materials encourage gentle manipulation, such as wrapping the baby Jesus and tucking Him into the manger.
JESUS AND HIS MOTHER, MARY
Simple, beautiful images of Mary and the Child Jesus are present. Works often involve caring for these images (e.g., dusting or washing a small frame) to build a relational model of love and care.
PRAYER AS RELATIONSHIP
The emphasis is on simple gestures of reverence and joy, such as learning to make the Sign of the Cross, folding hands, and genuflecting. The environment itself is set up for spontaneous, joyful response to God. These small children sometimes are still quite attached to their mothers. When the mother prays, the child is naturally part of that prayer. The prayer in the Atrium is precious and holy because of what these little ones bring.
CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
Practical Life Works are the heart of this Atrium for toddlers. Children water plants, dust the furniture, arrange flowers, polish small items, and sweep. This work cultivates a sense of order, care, and joyful service, mirroring the care for God’s creation.
THE LIGHT OF CHRIST
A beautiful candle is used to focus attention during prayer time. The experience of light and darkness is presented as a comforting reality, preparing them for the light of Baptism.
